Before you go

Behold the Magic of Fairbanks, Alaska Northern Lights

In brushstrokes of yellow, green, red and blue across the night sky, the Cleary Summit Aurora Borealis is a magical sight to see, and we'll make sure you do at Mount Aurora Lodge. Just ask us to wake you up when the colors start, and we'll be happy to knock, or give you a call. We track the Northern Lights show via a webcam so we know the optimum times to go outside and gaze at the sky. It's one of the most amazing natural phenomenona in the world, as solar particles hit the atmosphere in waves of color everyone should see at least once.

  • What time of year can you view the Northern Lights?

For reasons relatively unknown, March is the best month to see auroras in Fairbanks. October is a close second, as equinoxes seem to attract the most frequent, vibrant colors.
  • What is the best type of camera to use?

An average SLR camera will do just fine, but many photographers prefer either Canon or Nikon. The key is a high ISO capability, as opposed to megapixels, because you'll be shooting with a long exposure.
